Know Your Hair, Love Your Curls
If you’ve got curls, chances are you've gone through a rollercoaster of trial and error. I sure did. For years, I tried to fight my hair, blow-drying it, straightening it, tying it up, trying to make it look "normal." But there was nothing normal about denying who I really was. Only after a long time did I realize I needed to stop fighting and start listening.
Throughout my life, I’ve tried dozens of creams, mousses, gels, and masks always hoping to find "the one." What I learned is that it’s not magic -it’s all about understanding your unique hair. Sometimes it was a new product that brought back my shine, and other times, I simply needed to drink more water – even that affects your curls!
There were days when my curls felt like chaos - and I had to tie them up. And there were mornings I looked in the mirror and thought - wow, this is really mine. Getting to know my hair was a huge part of getting to know myself.
First Things First - Know Your Curl Type
There are several types of curls, divided into categories by shape and volume:
Type 2 - Wavy Hair: Gentle waves that can range from loose to more defined. Usually medium volume and prone to frizz. If your hair dries with a soft wave but not full curls, this may be your type.
Type 3 - Curly Hair: These are well-defined, springy curls that often begin close to the scalp. They love moisture and have natural volume. If your curls form tight ringlets, you're likely here.
Type 4 - Coily or Kinky Hair: Very tight curls or zig-zag patterns with high density and volume. Often less defined but full of texture. If your hair feels dense and thick with tiny curls, this is your type.
How to find out your type? Wash your hair, let it air dry without any products, and observe the natural texture, volume, and pattern.
Tip 1 Your Hair Routine Starts with Understanding
Your curls need different things in summer and winter, after the beach or a shower. Listen to your hair, is it dry? Oily? Someone with dense curls needs more moisture; someone with light waves may prefer something airier.
Tip 2 Don’t Be Afraid to Switch It Up
It’s okay for your routine to change. Maybe a product that worked perfectly for a year just doesn’t anymore. Maybe a hair mask does magic when you leave it for 10 minutes instead of 3. Go with the flow.
Tip 3 Be Gentle When Detangling
No matter your curl type, aggressive brushing is never the answer. A wide tooth comb on wet hair is gold. And if you can skip the brush altogether even better.
Tip 4 Sleep the Smart Way
Silk pillowcases, a loose scrunchie, or even a thin scarf can make a huge difference. Less frizz, more shine in the morning. Nighttime is the perfect moment to give your curls some love.
Tip 5 Don’t Skip Sun Protection
Many people think our curls protect our faces from the sun – and while they might provide some coverage, they don’t prevent dark spots or UV damage. That’s why wearing a hat is essential. Not just any hat – one that actually fits your curls, protects your style, and shields your face. That’s exactly why I created Wholein Curly Hats – hats that work for curls, keep the look, and protect your glow.
In the End? It’s a Journey
Getting to know your hair is part of getting to know yourself. It changes, it evolves but it’s always worth it.
Love it, care for it, and it’ll love you right back.
